Beyond his global reputation for fine writing instruments, George S. Parker’s entrepreneurial spirit led him into the high-stakes world of the Wisconsin mining boom. In 1904, alongside his partner William Palmer, they diversified the Parker Pen Company’s interests by establishing the Baxter Mining Company to tap into the rich zinc deposits of Cuba City. The venture proved remarkably lucrative, with the Baxter Mine being hailed as the “banner mine of America” and commanding valuations of up to $600,000—a staggering sum at the time. This strategic foray into lead and zinc mining reveals a complex side of Parker’s executive history and provides a compelling explanation for the shift in corporate leadership roles within his pen company during that era.
